Mumbai: A fire broke out in the pantry car of the Howrah-bound Duronto Express at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) yard, causing a stir. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning while the train was being moved for maintenance. However, no passengers were injured as the train was completely empty at the time.
Railway sources reported that the fire started in the empty rake of Train No. 12261 CSMT–Howrah Duronto Express around 3:40 AM. The pantry car involved bears the number SCR/192967. Fire services were alerted immediately after the fire was spotted. Firefighters arrived at the scene around 4:01 AM and brought the blaze under control within minutes; the Railways stated that the fire was fully contained by 4:05 AM.
Thick smoke spread across the yard area following the incident. Several people were seen near the tracks while the fire was being extinguished, and images and videos of the event have already surfaced. Since there were no passengers on board the rake at the time, there was no loss of life or injury to travelers. The initial cause of the fire remains unclear, and an investigation is underway to determine how the fire started in the pantry car of the empty train.
The incident has also affected the Duronto Express's scheduled journey. The train was originally slated to depart from CSMT for Howrah at 5:15 PM on September 29. Later, the Railways announced a change in the departure time to accommodate passengers; according to the revised schedule, the train is now set to depart from CSMT at 8:30 AM on September 30.
